Wool! Wool! and more Wool! The Green Mountain Spinnery purchases New England wool in order to support local farmers. However, more is need, therefore wool is purchase from as far away as Texas and Montana. All fiber the Green Mountain Spinnery uses is domestic.
David, one of the original founders of the Spinnery, is the purchaser. He grades (defines fineness) and sorts the wool upon arrival.
Scouring (washing) is a difficult job. The wool is first soaked in hot soapy water (170°c) for 20 minutes. The scouring train runs the wool through a series of rinse pans and rollers. The Green Mountain Spinnery has developed a recycling system to recycle water and a filtration system to aid with the safe amd environmentally sound disposal of waste water.
The carding process begins with picking the wool to open the fibers and begin the blending. The wool is picked 2 or 3 times with the final picking lightly sprayed with a spinning oil. The Green Mountain Spinnery has developed a GREENSPUN yarn that is process without any petrolem products. The 2-stage carder combs the wool and produces a soft lofty bat that is then separated into 4 rolls with 24 pencil roving ends.
Next the rolls are moved to the spinning frame where twist is incorporated to create yarn.
Some yarn is then plyed. Two bobbins of spun singles are twisted together to form 2-ply or 3-ply yarn.
Yarn is put up in skeins or on cones.
